Making "Pop-Up"
At this point the design was complete. All that was missing was a joke. Since the front of the card was going to be comparatively boring, I had the idea that maybe the cover could be a work-in-progress, complete with a note from Carol saying that the design needed a little more pop.
From then it was just a matter of waiting about a month until the cards came back from manufacturing. They came in a huge box all the way from Viet Nam. I couldn't understand why the box was so large until I looked inside. The huge box contained 6 smaller boxes. Each of those boxes contained 4 packages of six cards. Each card was individually wrapped and sealed in its own plastic sleeve. LovePop does an excellent job of manufacturing.
Carol ended up hand-writing every Post-It note that we sent out (175!) and I affixed them. I ordered special "super-sticky" Post-Its so they wouldn't easily fall off and ruin the joke. The original note said "D – looks good but could use some pop. C", but after we assembled about 50 cards we decided that spelling out Dennis and Carol rather than using initials, along with some other clarifications, might make the joke clearer.
I really enjoyed this project. Both LovePop and The Possible Project were a joy to work with. It was fascinating to see how they design and manufacture their cards.
