Making "Drone"
I first went up to Middlesex Fells on a scouting expedition. I wanted to see if I could find a good location to shoot a photo of the tower, which I remember visiting a few times when I was in college. Unfortunately, either my memory has grown fuzzy with the years or there have been some pretty significant changes up there. Here's the surroundings around that tower. Note the chain link fence and the conspicuous sign saying "Report unusual activity." Even if I could find an angle to shoot the photo that would obscure the ugly storage facility, there was still the very real sense that a drone flying over a secure site would count as "unusual activity" and I'd be busted by the Department of Homeland Security.
I left the reservation feeling fairly depressed, but as I left I drove by Wright's Tower, which is the stone tower you can see when driving on 93. I'd never paid it much attention before but decided to do some research.
Meanwhile, I took Bill's drone to Larz Anderson Park to learn how to fly it and to scout out that location. I learned that it took great pictures. Below is a picture taken from the drone while it was sitting on a picnic table.
But I also realized that in order to take the photo I wanted I'd have to be flying the drone over the lake, which seemed like a very bad idea. So at this point I'd struck out at both places.
