Making "New Yearer"
My first caption was Our calendar is so much better than our parents. Theirs is a whole year full of Mondays. Eventually this was shortened to the simpler "Our parents' calendar is a year full of Mondays." This makes the point in less than half of the words. I am happy to say that the caption also satisfies one of the caption principles that the cartoonists all mentioned at the lecture – make sure the funniest word is at the end.
All that was left was the actual cartoon drawing. I decided that maybe I could make it work if I designed a calendar template in Adobe Photoshop and then filled in the rest by hand. One of my other favorite cartoons appears to include some machine-aided lines:
So I started sketching a calendar outline in Photoshop. That's when the light bulb went off. "I can draw anything in Photoshop. I can make a month template and then resize the months that should be featured. This will be easy."
