Making "New Yearer"
I have been an avid reader of The New Yorker for years. For some time now I have been toying with the idea of creating a card on the "New Yearer" theme. My original thinking was that the cover of the card would be a cartoon that was obviously a New Yorker cartoon. I thought that I could find a funny drawing, change the caption so that it would be vaguely New Year-ish, and use that as the cover. It would actually be good if the cartoon and caption were not quite funny, as so many New Yorker cartoons have that property. Since I own a copy of The Complete New Yorker on DVD, I looked through the archives for cartoons that had a time theme.
The best cartoon I could find was this one, which also happens to be one of my favorites.
My idea was that I would change the caption to something like In 10 minutes the stone in Times Square will change to MMVII. If you don't think that is particularly funny, well, you're right. And that's one of the reasons why I abandoned this approach.
